Be Whole, Be Held, Be Loved, Be Love by Bill Wofford

I got hooked on yoga the first time I took a hatha class thirty years ago. I found it magical how working my body could still my mind. While dedication to my practice waxed and waned over the years as countless other things competed for my energy and attention, the arc of yoga gradually bent in the direction of more consistency and greater depth.

By 2024, I was feeling the call to share my yoga with others. This has been a year of teacher trainings for me – nearly 500 hours of them in fact. On the advice of a trusted teacher, I enrolled in an online 200-hour yoga teacher training course at Sattva Yoga Academy and earned my first certification. I began teaching at Yoga Garden and got to know some of you. I learned that teaching yoga is more challenging than it looks and even more satisfying. Thank you to all in the community for your support and encouragement.

After Lexie and I set out for India for our advanced teacher training with Anand Mehrotra and the amazing team at Sattva, the arc bent sharply upwards. As has my enthusiasm for sharing yoga.

This training has been a master course into the power of yoga to connect and transform. We have learned practical ways of guiding our bodies and our students into our unique expressions of yoga poses (asanas). We have learned to practice and teach Himalayan Kriyas, powerful combinations of breath, sound and movement to shift and enliven energy and consciousness. And have (finally) learned how to “drop in” to a “no mind” state in meditation and how to share this superpower.

Most impactful has been drilling deep into the “why.” Yoga was not developed over thousands of years as a tool to sculpt a nice butt (though that may be a nice side effect for some of us). Rather, it is a set of tools to help us refine our state of consciousness. Skillfully applied, these tools have the power to help us be whole, be held, be loved and be love.

While yoga doesn’t end on the mat, the mat is a fantastic place to start. We’re greatly looking forward to sharing some new techniques in our classes. I look forward to seeing you in class soon.

love,

Bill
